Question by Sam: Can I use “et al.” in a sentence?
I’m writing a paper on traumatic brain injuries, so I am consulting a lot of medical journals. Frequently there are 8+ authors/contributors per article. My paper is becoming cluttered with long lists of names…. For instance, one sentence might read: Dr. John Smith, Dr. John Doe, Dr. Jane Doe, Dr. Anyone, Dr. Who Cares, and Dr. Example note that traumatic brain injuries “occur when … blah blah blah” (100). I am using MLA format… Can I abbreviate this as simply “Dr. John Smith et al. note that”? Or do I need to write it out?
Thank you!

This video was made by my dad, Dr. Veteto. (This is an article copied from the November 2007 issue of Tulsa, Oklahoma magazine “Community Spirit”) BEING THANKFUL Cody Veteto: Thankful For Life A 19 year-old Cody Veteto stood at the top of the ski lift, pulled out his cell phone and called his mom to tell her how much fun he was having. ”I’m standing on top of a mountain!” he told her as he hung up. Minutes later, while snowboarding with a friend through a band of trees, Cody had an accident that could have, probably should have, taken his life. The Winter Park Ski Resort got him down off the mountain and he was airlifted to a Denver hospital. Cody’s brain injury was so bad, Doctors were shocked to find out he was actually wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. They gave his father, Dr. Ken Veteto, a Tulsa Internal Medicine Doctor, a very gloomy prognosis. Cody’s parents, family and friends gathered around him. Prayer teams immediately formed from churches in Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado, as well as from Abilene Christian University where Cody attended school. Against all odds and reason, the teams prayed with great expectation, planning for and believing in a full recovery. ”I’m sorry God, but having him back halfway is not enough. We ask that you bring him back better than before,” was the heartfelt prayer of one friend. Two months of coma went by with only glimpses of hope. Doctors struggled to give him time to heal, pulling him through secondary dangers such …

I would find it quite normal to read “et al” in such a context.
Depending on the Style Manual (Such as the Chicago Manual of Style), it depends on, what the correct way is of using it. Typically, in professional science journals, the style rule is that
The first person is the person who is in charge of or the main scientist, or the head professor, or whomever oversaw the project. This person has full professorship, usually, in academia.
This is followed, usually by an associate professor or if none, then at least one or two graduate students who are the main graduate students on the project.
All other people can be lumped as “et al”
So for example, Johnson, Darrel, Phd who led the project is the head professor
Smith, Sarah, is the Associate Professor
Krebs, Maynard, is the graduate student
Then, lets say there were five other “assistants” who helped out. So a reference would go…
Johnson, Darrel, Smith, Sarah, Krebs, Maynard et al
god? what did that sci-fi character have to with it?… just a matter of luck, and good health care…simple as that!
@Wildcat678 my older brother tried to commit suicide,he hung himself, ended up in a coma and he finally made it out of it but unfourtunally his suffered from brain damage because his brain didn’t get any oxygen for about 28 minutes so brain cells died,he opens his eyes now,he tries to talk,he moves his arms and legs and he even asks us for water we think he getting better but the doctors say that his brain may only recover too little, i don’t nkow what to do i feel so sad.
I cried all through this video. I am so happy you’re doing better.
@deskset24: Yeah, you actually telling him where to direct his thanks AND where not to was very ignorant, lol.
@ipodchik Actually, no it’s not. Only a dumb fuckhead who does not respect freedom of speech and is intolerant of viewpoints other than the ultra rightwing christian ideology would claim that my opinion “sickens” them. Because YOUR kind forces others to tell ME where to direct MY thanks. For example: you’re the type who shoves it down other throats that they “gotta” thank paid US soldiers for their freedom. Bullshit. I don’t owe them anything. They owe me for trillions in taxes they spend.
I’m so happy you’re doing good! This is a great video :]
*deskset24: Wow… how dare you actually TELL him where to direct his thanks in such a disrespectful manner… That’s a sickening response from you.
This is an inspirational video, it give me hope for my own son. I do realize that each patient is different. My 27 yr old son, as of today as been in a “chronic vegetative state” for over 5 months since his car accident (he was wearing his seat belt) and not a single day or second goes by that we are praying for him. I realize this has been a long journey for you and your family, my prayers that things continue in a positive manner for all of you.
i dont know you…but im very glad you’re ok
@TheCardPlayer There’s a thing called “video description,” you should try reading it.
Just so everyone is up to speed on this, deskset24 has already admitted he is a fat-ass himself. Probably ugly too as he has done the world a favor and not put up any videos of himself. He goes around the site, threatening the lives of people who do not agree with him, and thinks Adolph Hitler and Ingrid Newkirk are “heros”. He’s not a good person! If you see him, ignore him! He’s a teenager who has no life and is only acting tougher than he really is.
THANK MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, and ABSTRACT REASON FOR YOUR heroic recovery! Not “god”. Glad you are pulling through. I cannot imagine the hardship you have gone through.
@S4tunato That’s the best answer you have? You are calling me a name, that isn’t true, but if it were, I wouldn’t be insulted by it in the least because that would be my nature. But YOU, being a Christian and all, think being gay is somehow an insult or something to be ashamed of.
SO TYPICALLY CHRISTIAN!
@angelofmedicine WOW, you have DEMONSTRABLE miracles? Do you realize you could be the most famous person in the history of the world, maybe even more so than jesus? You have PROOF that there was NO OTHER POSSIBLE EXPLANATION besides a supernatural one and you are keeping it to yourself? Think of all the souls you could save?
@christo930
fuckin faggot
Best of luck to you I know it has been a long road. My daughter sufferd a TBI a year and a half ago. It is very inspirational to see how well you are doing.
the brain is amazing
My daughter suffered a medically unexplained anoxic brain injury just 4 1/2 classes away from her Masters in Criminal Justice Administration. That was 5 months ago. God has been good and every day is a miracle.
Thank you Cody and family for the inspirational video, With God all things are possible and you have proven His power of healing, love and grace.

Wow, God Bless You. I couldn’t help it I had to cry.
you are truly an inspiration to so many people…thank God that u came through this horrible accident…thanks to the doctors and everyone who helped you get through this time…God Bless You
You’re story is amazing. It gives me hope for my husband, whom was just hit by a car 3 weeks ago and is still in the hospital with a TBI. The doctors thought he would be a vegetable, for there wasn’t a part of his brain that wasn’t injured, but he’s far from a vegetable. The doctor’s cannot explain it, but I can. It’s God in action. Praise the Lord!
